The weather API for Germany

Current weather, forecasts, rain radar and official warnings for any place in Germany, as JSON for your app, website or backend. The forecast comes from our own model, built on top of the weather models of the Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD), Germany’s national weather service.

Our forecast model

nano’s forecast comes from our own model

It is built on top of the DWD’s weather models: we don’t simulate the weather ourselves. We combine the DWD’s forecasts, adapt them to every place and correct them with live measurements. We check the result every hour and keep improving the model.

  1. 1What goes in

Two forecasts of the Deutscher Wetterdienst: its high-resolution weather model ICON-D2 (a grid of about 2 km) and its station forecasts (MOSMIX). We combine them and calculate the forecast for every place in Germany, corrected for its altitude.

  2. 2Corrected on every request

For the next hours, each request adjusts the forecast with the latest DWD radar images for rain and the latest station measurements for temperature and clouds.

  3. 3Tested before every change

Right now 7 versions of the model run side by side. Only one of them delivers the forecast you receive. A new version runs next to it for at least three days, at the same places and hours, and replaces it only if it measures better. This is how the forecast improves over time.

The methods behind the model

All weather data in one request

/v2/weather returns current conditions, the hourly and daily forecast, rain for the next two hours and official warnings together. You choose which parts you need.

Measured values for “now”

Current conditions come from the latest measurement of a nearby DWD weather station, not from a forecast.

Keys for each app

Create separate keys for each app and environment. Keys for iOS and Android only work with your bundle ID or package name; keys for websites can be limited to your domains.

Clear limits

Your plan includes a number of units per month; a normal request costs one unit. Every response tells you how many are left.

No tracking of your users

We do not store your users’ locations, apart from short-lived server logs. Servers in the EU.

Free for commercial use

10,000 units a month for free, also in commercial products. You only need to name the source: Deutscher Wetterdienst.

Start with the free plan

10,000 units a month and up to 5 requests per second, also for commercial use. Paid plans for more traffic are coming.
